Why Collegiate Recovery?

because you CAN be in recovery AND be successful...in fact, it helps

IN BALANCE COLLEGIATE RECOVERY

In Balance Transitional Living has been open since 2006 and since then, we have had guys working, going to college, and volunteering. Historically, we have shied away from the university experience due to the large amount of students, a large Greek life and little recovery presence. That has changed drastically. The University of Arizona has been very receptive to recovery. They have been able to start two 12 step meetings on campus that can draw over 60 students each. Additionally, they have pursued and received a grant from the State of Arizona to help support recovery endeavors. Finally, they have started their own recovery group called Wildcats Anonymous (wildcatsanon.arizona.edu).

We now feel comfortable having our guys be integrated into University of Arizona’s college campus. We now feel that young people can be successful in recovery and academics at a major university. This is why we opened In Balance Collegiate Recovery as part of our In Balance Transitional Living program. It will be affiliated with the U of A’s Wildcats Anonymous program and Pima Community College. It will include (2 minutes away) campus housing and an academic advisor that will review the students' syllabi and grades weekly. This academic adviser will also help with college enrollment, help set up one of four subject specific tutors, and be there to help with assignments and executive functioning. The program will have set study hours and study skills workshops as part of our life skills curriculum. The program, in partnership with the U of A, will set up sober tailgates, sober night life activities, and other sober college experiences. No longer must young people in recovery decide between being sober or successful, now they can do both. This program, just like our current Transitional Living program, will have a heavy 12 step emphasis, clinical sophistication, life skills and loads of fun recreational activities. This program will be for 17-25 year old males with substance abuse and other co-occurring disorders that are enrolled in college. It will have the same model, philosophy and staff as In Balance Transitional Living so please review the rest of this website for information on both programs.

The University of Arizona

The University of Arizona is only 1.0 mile away from the Transitional Living campus. The prestigious school describes itself as "The University of Arizona (UA) is a place without limits-where teaching, research, service and innovation merge to improve lives in Arizona and beyond. We aren't afraid to ask big questions, and find even better answers. Since it was founded, the UA has grown to cover more than 380 acres in central Tucson, a rich breeding ground for discovery. Where else in the world can you find an astronomical observatory mirror lab under a football stadium? An entire ecosystem under a glass dome? Visit our campus, just once, and you'll quickly understand why the UA is a university unlike any other.
Here, "Bear Down" is more than just a motto.

Before UA student body president and revered football quarterback John "Button" Salmon died in 1926, his last words to his teammates were "Tell them ... tell them to bear down." Whether it's academics, athletics or research, we've adopted the stance that when the going gets tough, the tough #BearDown.

Our curiosity knows no bounds. As a leading-edge public research university, we're inspired to explore humanity's most fundamental questions - about science, medicine, the arts and business. Our faculty includes members of esteemed national academies, Pulitzer Prize winners, White House Champions of Change and celebrated thought leaders in numerous disciplines. We are leading projects that will change how we see the world, such as the OSIRIS-REx mission, which will scoop samples from a near-Earth asteroid in 2020.

Our graduates are workforce-ready. At the UA, 100 percent of our undergraduates will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they learn in the classroom in the real-world, through internships, community service, on-campus jobs and research opportunities. Our mission is to graduate students who are sought after by the best employers and postgraduate programs, and who are ready to embark on engaging, fulfilling careers. Equipped with skills, knowledge, experience and the entrepreneurial spirit they gain at the UA, our students become highly skilled members of society who lead with determination, innovate without limits and create companies that generate more jobs, benefitting our state, our nation and the world, in boundless ways. Our alumni include astronauts and actors; Grammy, Tony, Emmy and Oscar winners; media stars; Olympic athletes; Fortune 500 CEOs; public servants; Nobel scientists; inventors and best-selling authors.
Bigger Questions. Better Answers. Bear Down."
